Most Mac and MacBook hardware is supported, including Wi-Fi, USB 2, the screen, NVMe, Lid switch, Power button, keyboard, touchpad, battery information, charge control, Ethernet, SD card reader, and CPU frequency switching. VMware Fusion 12 also features a 2D graphics driver that properly renders the Windows desktop on high-resolution displays. The Asahi Linux team has done a fantastic job of reverse engineering drivers with little to go on. On the other hand, standard apps like the Firebox browser work as expected, within those limitations. That means gaming will not work and it can't even handle video streaming. The VM won't even boot now that the kernel has been upgraded. ![]() Remove the existing holds you have on the kernel and associated files. I had been running Ubuntu server on my Mac M1 (ARM) successfully up until about a month ago. Once booted, sudo to root and use the mainline utility to remove the 5.19 kernel: mainline -uninstall 5.19.0. This is an early release and most users shouldn't bother, although it is still interesting to see how far it has come. In the grub boot menu, select 'Advanced options for Ubuntu', and boot the latest 5.4 kernel you find. The GPU card isn't enabled and admittedly will take quite some time to get working. While the M1 processor brought changes that eliminated the easiest option, developers have been working on alternate solutions and a Linux installer is now available that works with Apple's latest Mac and MacBook computers. The Asahi Linux installer allows setting up a separate partition to boot directly into Linux on an Apple Silicon Mac and runs well with a few limitations.
